This is the best source material I've come across in one of these yet. Not everything is great, but Dan O'Neill does a one-page story, which is neat.

Somewhat autobiographical story in which the artist/author disappears and a detective is hired to find him.

Some bits were funny, but overall I found this book sort of self-indulgent and weird.

In the vast castle of Gormenghast, a baby boy is born. That same day a young man slips from the kitchen in search of a better life for himself. This young man, Steerpike, is our villain. The earl's personal servant and the head chef have an enmity between them that will turn out to be lethal. And a young woman is brought from the village beyond the gates to be the new heir's wet nurse.

This is not an easy book to read. The language requires concentration and the pacing is slow. I found the story compelling anyway.
