The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Catniss has been taking care of her family since her father died. So when her sister is drawn to play in the Hunger Games--a state-sponsored contest in which 24 kids are selected at random to kill each other until only one is left--Catniss immediately volunteers to take her sister's place.

Pretty bleak story, but compelling enough that I kept reading.
