I've read World War Z, the zombie novel that came out around the same time as this one, and it was really good. Never been that interested in Monster Island, especially since I read the author's crappy vampire novel. But I had a copy, and curiosity won.
When the zombie apocalypse happened, the most civilized countries went down first. Places like the middle east, war-torn countries, were much more adapted for survival. Dekalb worked for the UN, wound up agreeing to look for AIDS drugs in return for his daughter's safety. The search takes him and a bunch of teenage female soldiers to Manhattan.
It's an interesting premise, enough to keep you reading. Not sure I'm interested in the sequels, though.
