It became common for MPD sufferers to possess scores, even hundreds, of alters (one was reputed to have 4,500). Not all were human; some weren't even alive. Patients reported gorillas and lobsters, as well as unicorns, angels and--if the alters were immoble and voiceless--trees.
A slightly disturbed woman goes to a highly ambitious female psychiatrist who, after prescribing a bunch of dangerous drugs and administering drug shock therapy, informs the young woman that she has multiple personalities because of childhood abuse. There's going to be a book! So much money!
The disturbed woman, wanting to please her therapist, comes up with some alternate personalities. The personalities aren't very distinct until the woman picked to write the book says she needs it to be more interesting.
The writer finds that most of what she has been told is bullshit, but writes the book anyway.
This shit is terrifying. You should read it.
